DANCE STYLES

HIP HOP

THE STYLE:
Hip Hop dance emerged in the 1970s within African American and Latinx communities, growing alongside the broader culture of Hip Hop. It is one of the four original pillars of Hip Hop culture (alongside DJing, MCing, and graffiti art). The style is rooted in music, social connection, and self-expression, and is built on foundational elements like bounce, rock, and groove. Hip Hop includes a wide range of techniques such as breaking, popping, locking, and party dances, all grounded in rhythm and individuality.

OUR APPROACH:
At Intuit, Hip Hop classes are offered in a variety of levels and supportive, focusing on fundamentals, groove, and confidence. Dancers learn steps, combinations and choreography while also being invited to experience the cultural practice of cyphers—a circle-based exchange where dancers take turns sharing movement. We emphasize Hip Hop as both a technical dance form and a cultural practice, celebrating individuality and creativity.

BENEFITS OF HIP HOP TRAINING:
Hip Hop training develops rhythm, coordination, and musicality while encouraging confidence and self-expression. It builds cardiovascular endurance and body awareness, and fosters a sense of community through shared movement and dance cyphers. Beyond physical benefits, Hip Hop empowers dancers to connect with music in a personal, expressive way.

CULTURAL NOTE:
Hip Hop is deeply rooted in African American culture and history. While instructors may not have lived experience within this culture, we work to honour its roots through knowledge, education, and respect. Our instructors and classes are inspired by the art form, and we teach with gratitude to the communities that created and continue to shape Hip Hop.

THE STYLE: Contemporary combines ballet and modern dance with a focus on fluidity, individuality, and expression. It often incorporates grounded floorwork, extended lines, and creative transitions.
OUR APPROACH: At Intuit, contemporary is about exploring personal artistry while building strength and technique. Classes include improvisation, expressive combinations, and fluid transitions, encouraging dancers to move authentically and with emotional connection. Youth and adult programs are tailored to ability level, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.

BENEFITS OF CONTEMPORARY: Contemporary builds versatility by teaching dancers to move seamlessly between strength and softness, control and freedom. It enhances flexibility, core strength, and musicality while developing creativity and emotional expression. For youth dancers, contemporary provides an outlet for storytelling and artistry; for adults, it offers a physical workout and a chance to connect more deeply with movement and emotions.

LYRICAL CONTEMPORARY

THE STYLE:

Just as importantly, ballet encourages focus and confidence, giving dancers tools they can carry into both performance and everyday life.

While our instructors do not represent those cultures directly, we teach with respect and acknowledgment of these roots, and we approach this fusion style with inspiration and gratitude for the traditions that shaped it.

STREET DANCE FOUNDATIONS

THE STYLE:
Street dance is an umbrella term for dance styles that evolved outside of formal studios, often in clubs, streets, and community gatherings.

  • Hip Hop originated in African American and Latinx communities in the 1970s, rooted in music, groove, and individuality, with foundations like bounce, rock, and groove.

  • House dance developed in Chicago and New York clubs in the 1980s, grounded in house music culture, with fast footwork, fluid torso movement, and improvisation as its core.

  • Shuffle dance grew out of Melbourne’s underground rave scene in the 1990s and is characterized by sliding footwork, kicks, and flowing patterns to electronic dance music.

Each of these styles carries its own cultural lineage and context, but they share common threads of rhythm, groove, and community.

OUR APPROACH:
At Intuit, Street Dance Foundations introduces students to the core movements and principles of Hip Hop, House, and Shuffle, creating a supportive space to explore rhythm, groove, and footwork. Classes focus on foundations, repetition, and combinations while encouraging dancers to bring their individuality to the movement. Our aim is to provide both technical skills and cultural awareness, giving dancers an appreciation for where these forms come from.

BENEFITS OF STREET DANCE TRAINING:
Street Dance Foundations develops rhythm, stamina, and coordination while strengthening improvisation and musicality. It gives dancers versatility by exposing them to multiple styles and movement pathways, while also encouraging creativity and personal expression. It’s physically engaging, community-focused, and an accessible entry point into the broader street dance world.

CULTURAL NOTE:
Each style within Street Dance Foundations carries its own cultural and historical significance: Hip Hop is rooted in African American culture and history, House comes from Black, Latinx, and queer club culture, and Shuffle evolved from rave and electronic dance music communities. Our instructors do not represent all of these lived cultural experiences, but we approach this class with respect, education, and acknowledgment of the communities that created and continue to shape these forms. We teach with gratitude, and our goal is to inspire students through these styles while honouring their origins.
